Mastering OET Writing: Strategies for Success

OET Writing tests your ability to produce a profession-specific healthcare letter that is clear, accurate, and appropriate for its intended reader. You’ll need to select, organise, and present relevant case-note information in a professional format.


OET Writing Format

  • Task: Write a letter (commonly referral, transfer, or discharge but it depends on your profession) based on case notes.

  • Word limit: Around 180–200 words (excluding addresses and salutations).

  • Time allowed: 45 minutes, including 5 minutes of reading time.

  • Skills assessed: Purpose of the letter, content selection, conciseness and clarity, organisation, language, and healthcare writing conventions (Genre and Style).
